Medical Needs Priority Over Billing

By Tracy Ayers
tracy.ayers@gilesnews.us

Anyone needing emergency medical services in Giles County can be sure the first question EMT’s will ask when they arrive at the scene is, “How can we help?” and not “Can we see your insurance card?”

Giles County Ambulance Service Director Roy Griggs said residents in need of immediate medical attention should not worry themselves with the new billing practices of TennCare, MediCare and other insurance companies.

“Understand, we don’t care what kind of coverage, if any, the patient has,” Griggs explained. “We are there to provide a medical service, first and foremost.”

This comment came after Griggs told WKSR he has no plans to sign the renewal contract with TennCare for Giles County.

“The first thing they wanted to do was cut our money,” Griggs said in the radio interview. “TennCare was paying $2.05 per mile and $153.75 per trip. The new contract offer reduced the mileage paid to $1.50 per mile and $125 per trip.

“Those are 1994 rates, and with the rising cost of gasoline, insurance and maintenance on the vehicles, we cannot operate like that.”

When the state made changes in TennCare last year, many were left scrambling to figure out if and how they were affected, including ambulance services across the state.

While Giles County currently has no contract with TennCare, the county does get some reimbursement.

“Instead of paying 100 percent like they used to do, now they pay 80 percent,” Griggs said, adding that it is still better than the contract offer made by the statewide health care organization. www.gilesnews.us

Orthopaedist Returns to Hillside

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Board certified orthopaedist, Dr. Richard C. Taylor, returns to Hillside Hospital as of June 6, announce hospital officials.

“Dr. Taylor’s return will be good for both our hospital and the community,” hospital CEO Jim Edmondson said. “The availability of orthopedic care is so important because it affects all ages and most of the time the need is immediate.

“Dr. Taylor left his private practice to travel across the country and work in several different practices during his travels. He was highly recruited by several hospitals and physicians this last year, but his heart remained in Giles County.

“We received phone calls and letters from former patients asking us to persuade him to come back. Our staff also played a vital role in getting him to return to a private practice.”

Taylor is a graduate of the University of Colorado, where he also received his medical degree. He completed his surgical internship and residency at the University of California in Irvine at the Orange County Medical Center. He completed his orthopedic training at the Orthopaedic Residency Training Program of Phoenix in Phoenix, Ariz..

Taylor is a Fellow American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery member and has more than 30 years of experience in the field of orthopaedics.

Orthopaedics is the specialty that treats disorders of the bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. In addition to injuries, these specialists also treat chronic problems such as arthritis and osteoporosis. With the growing interests in recreational activities and exercising, more Americans are encountering such ailments as lower back pain, tennis elbow, sprained muscles and even broken bones.

“Having Dr. Taylor back, along with the care provided by Dr. Robert Collins, will give residents in the area a choice of two board certified orthopaedists, as well as 24-7 care,” Edmondson said. “Both are phenomenal surgeons and both have their special interest in addition to providing basic orthopaedic care. Dr. Taylor is a specialist in arthroscopic surgery, and Dr. Collins is a specialist in hand surgery. I am pleased that we are able to provide such a high caliber of care so close to home.”

Taylor is moving into the new Doctor’s Pavilion II, 204 Hillside Drive, across from the hospital. Although he will not be in the office until June 6, there is staff available to schedule an appointment.

For additional information or to schedule an appointment, call his new office manager, Pam Coy, at 363-3514.

Surgeon Joins Hillside Hospital Staff

Wednesday, June 13, 2007
Dr. Kenna J. Williams

General surgeon, Dr. Kenna J. Williams, has been added to the hospital’s medical staff.

Williams and her family are relocating to Giles County from Cookeville, where she has been an active staff member at Cookeville Regional Medical Center since 1995.

“We are very pleased to have Dr. Williams joining us,” Hillside CEO, Jim Edmondson said. “We go to great strides to recruit physicians and surgeons that we feel will have a positive impact on the community professionally and personally. She is an extremely talented surgeon and a delightful person to be around. I have no doubt she will be a success and will be embraced by the medical community and the residents of our area.”

Williams received a bachelor of arts degree in biology from the University of Virginia. She completed premedical studies at Memphis State University and received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee. She also completed her residency training in general surgery at the University of Tennessee.

Williams is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. She has years of experience in all facets of general surgery, but she has a personal interest and special training in breast surgery.

While in Cookeville she was an active member of her community. She was a member of the Cookeville Noon Rotary Club, an active member of the United Methodist Church, a member of the Putnam County Health Council and the Putnam County Medical Association. She is the past president of the Board of Directors of the Putnam County Rural Health Clinics.

In May 2003, Williams was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Tennessee Medical Association, Board of Trustees. She received the honor for her volunteer service to the Putnam County Rural Health Clinics as the organizer, past president and chief operating officer for approximately five years.

“Dr. Williams will definitely add to the surgical services available at Hillside, and her special interest and experience in breast surgery will certainly enhance our women’s health services,” Edmondson said. “Her references are impeccable, and she is renowned for her excellent rapport with her colleagues and her kind and gentle manner with her patients. Complimenting Dr. Williams skills will be the non-stereotactic mammography equipment the hospital will be purchasing.”

Williams is currently taking calls for surgeon Dr. Todd Lucas. She will be moving into the office previously occupied by Dr. Armando Foronda at 1150 E. College St.

For additional information regarding the services provided by Williams, call 363-7100.
